CERTIFICATION

Sustainability is nothing new in Alaska. Alaska has always been deeply committed to ensuring that its wild, natural and delicious seafood can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Why Certification?

In order to provide credible verification of what Alaska has been doing for over fifty years, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is now offering a choice in certification. This new independent, third-party certification of the management of the major Alaska commercial fisheries is directly based on the respected United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (Code) and the FAO Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries (Guidelines) – both recognized around the globe as the best criteria for responsible fisheries management.

Because the certification is being provided through ASMI, there will be no logo licensing fees. ASMI is not developing a new consumer facing eco-label. The certification will help to enhance the Alaska origin as a leading source of sustainable seafood. Certification will provide additional assurance to buyers, markets, and stakeholders that seafood from Alaska is responsibly managed.
